6:00 pm
are definitely looking out for you. >> sean: so after hiding out on the campaign trail for 8 month, the president finally found time to meet the press for the first time since early march, he held a formal news conference. to say this was long overdue, well, that would be an understatement. a lot has transpired since the last time the president found the courage to face his suck-up friends, from benghazi to the resignation of a cia director. there were more questions than answers. that's where we begin with the petraeus scandal and whether or not the president believes our national security was ever at risk as a result of the affair.
6:01 pm
>> i have no evidence at this point, from what i have seen that classified information was... disclosed, that in any way would have had a negative impact on our national security. obviously, there is an ongoing investigation. i don't want to comment on the specifics of the investigation. >> sean: here's the problem, mr. president. your administration has lost any and all credibility when it comes to investigating itself. that includes benghazi because on that matter, above all others, you simply cannot be trusted, which is exactly why g.o.p. senators are calling for the formation of a select committee to lead the benghazi inquiry. let's look at this. >> i think if there was ever a time in recent history for the congress to follow models we have used in the past, it is benghazi. watergate investigation benefitted from a joint select committee. iran contra benefitted from a
6:02 pm
select committee. i think finding the truth about benghazi is only possible if you combine the resources of these three committees. >> sean: senator graham was also asked to sppd to the rumor that ambassador susan rice is being considered to replace hillary clinton as secretary of state. needless to say, he wasn't too fond of that suggestion, considering rice is the one who appeared on five sunday shows, blaming the benghazi attack on a youtube video. >> this is about the role she played around four dead americans when it seems to be that the story coming out of the administration and she is point person, is so disconnected to reality, i don't trust her. the reason i don't trust her is because i think she knew better. and if she didn't know better, f america. somebody has to start paying a price around this place. but i am dead set on making sure we don't promote anybody who was an essential player in the
6:03 pm
benghazi debacle. >> sean: it appears our president, mr. sensitive, took great offense to the critique. take a look at the very angry response. >> she made an appearance at the request of the white house, in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. and i am happy to have that discussion with them. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador, who had nothing to do with benghazi? and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received and to besmirch her reputation? is outrageous. >> sean: i hope you were paying very close attention there. because as usual when the
6:04 pm
teleprompters are not scrolling, the truth magically comes out. what you heard from the president for the first time, he admitted that rice was sent on the sunday shows, quote, at the request of the white house. now, if that is in fact the case and if susan rice was following marching orders from the president himself, well, that means she went into battle armed with white house talking points. and what do those talking points say? it appears they told her to ignore the intelligence committee because they knew within 24 hours al qaeda was behind this strike. instead of telling the truth, she repeatedly blamed the death of a u.s. ambassador and three other americans on this, quote, youtube video. why? because that's what she was told to do. she was following orders. it is becoming more and more clear where the orders are coming from. it's also clear that the president lied when he said this is one of the most critical moments at the 2012 presidential debates. remember when he said the following? >> the day after the attack, governor, i stood in the rose
6:05 pm
gards -- gard end and i told the american people and the world that we are going to find out exactly what happened, that this was an act of terror-- obviously, that's not true because the president now admits he sent rice on tv to blame the youtube video. now in a moment, senator graham will join me to respond directly to the challenge. but first, think about the exchange we just witnessed and then ask yourself, where were the follow-ups from the media? instead it was softball after softball, the press failed to do their job. here are some of the questions that should have been presented today, regarding benghazi. first, mr. president, did you know ambassador stevens made multiple requests for additional security after the british ambassador and the red cross left, over fears for their security?
6:06 pm
>> sean: one day, we are going to find out the answer to all of these question, mr. president. for that very reason, i would be very careful, daring congressional investigators to look in your direction. joining me now to respond to the president's challenge is south carolina senator lindsay graham. welcome back to the program. >> thank you. those are good questions. >> sean: they weren't asked today. vimore questions at the end of today than i do answers. let's get your initial reaction. >> number 1, i can't believe the president said that we sent
6:07 pm
someone out to explain benghazi who had nothing to do with benghazi. that's pretty stunning. why did they pick her? if she had nothing to do with benghazi. she is not in charge of conflict security. she works in the u.n. why nobody from the state department. i believe she's a close political ally of the president. she went on national tv, four or five days after the attack, when there is no credible informs that the video scenario was real and she either through incompetence or an intentional effort to mislead the american people, tried to spin a story that would help the president because if it was true that this was an al qaeda attack, long-time in the making, that killed our ambassador and three other brave americans, so much for the story, we killed osama bin laden, al qaeda's on the run, being dismantled. i am going to hold her accountable. she volunteered. she is either very incompetent
6:08 pm
or she was misleading. but the person i brame blame the most is president. >> sean: you said within 20 minutes of the press conference, you sent a response. you said, don't think, mr. president, for one minute that i don't ultimately blame you. i think you failed as commander in chief before, during and aafter the attack. i want you to give some details. there are so many unintrd questions here. >> okay, number 1, i wrote the president wreak -- weeks ago, mr. president, were you informed in the april and june attack on benghazi? in june there was an ied attack that blew a hole in the wall that 40 people could get through were you informed that the british closed their ambassador? were you inform that the red cross left? i think it's impossible that he was not told about the june attack. can you imagine the president of the united states going in public, being asked by a
6:09 pm
reporter, what do you think happened in benghazi yesterday and he said, i don't know what you are talking about? so i blame the president for leaving the consulate open in a fashion that it became a death trap. he should have closed the consulate or heavily reinforced it. once the attack occurred in april and in june, i blame the president above all others. >> sean: you know, senator, i am a little sick and tired of the mede why's fixation on the sex scandal part of this. in part because they mischaracterize our military. all right. certainly what happened was wrong. but we don't take into account, general petraeus put his life on the line for his country and got shot in the process at one point and risked his life. i think they have focused on that. my question to you is, we also have a report-- the only paula broadwell question i have -- two of them, actually. was this cia annex a detention, interrogation site as she
6:10 pm
suggested? she seemed confident when she said it. >> well, i tell you, everything you said about general petraeus is true. we were losing in iraq, he turned it around. he got us back on good footing in afghanistan that i think the president has made poor decisions on iraq and afghanistan, in spite of great military leadership. but general petraeus supposedly told the house intelligence and senate intelligence committee a couple of days after the attack, he thought it was the result of a radio. he needs to testify. secretary clinton needs to testify. august 15, ambassador stevens sent a cable from libya to the state department, to secretary clinton saying, we have identified 10 militia groups associated with al qaeda in benghazi, they are all over the place. if there is a coordinated attack, we can't defend the consulate. so she needs to account for why she did not grant the security request. we need to hear from all of these people. the way the congress is doing it, they are going to fall through the cracks. >> sean: i want to follow up on that.
6:11 pm
i think this is very, very key here. you are suggesting, the house and senate organized the hearings in the right way, otherwise, we are never going to get to the truth. explain that. it seem its make sense to me. >> the state department needs to answer for how the consulate was unsecured for so long. do you agree with that? >> sean: yes. >> the department needs to answer for the fact that 8 hours we didn't defend these people. do you agree with that. >> sean: i love being interrogated. yes. >> the cia needs to answer for about 10,000 things. how can you get to the truth if have you three or four committees going in separate directions? have a select committee. the house needs to lead. put a committee together, the relevant committees to ask the same questions of the same people and compare worries. what harry reid is proposing will allow this thing to fall apart. >> sean: we need the right people on the committees. >> oh, my god, god bless jason
6:12 pm
and the house oversight committee. i hope bainer and kantor will not make the mistakes we are making in the senate. look at it as a group, rather than a stovepipe approach and we will get to the truth. we deserve the truth. i have nothing against anybody, but do i have a desire to get to the truth. i am going to hold this president accountable, susan rice and others for a national security breakdown of monumental proportions. >> sean: it's a massive scandal. we have not gotten a lot of answers. much more of our analysis of the news conference with the veteran white house reporter from abc, jake tapper. and he will talk about his new book. israel kills a top hamas leader, the successful strike is likened in many ways to the killing of a top al qaeda operative. and palestinians and their muslim allies are calling for revenge. is this the beginning of a huge conflict in the middle-east?

responsible way. >> sean: all right. that was president obama earlier today in his first news conference in more than 8 months. joining me to help analyze the presser, somebody who is usually in the room, the author of the brand brand book, the outpost, the untold story of american valor. how are you? >> i'm great? >> i follow you on twitter. i love your tweets. i really live and breathe this, which i really like. i went through this with lindsay graham. i felt questions were not asked. you said between the first and second deigate -- debate, you said there was a general feeling in the romney campaign that the media was ready to right the -- write the obama comeback story. they feel as i do that there is an institutional bias. that's what they were saying to you. do you think that's true? >> this election, i didn't get as much of a general scheme because i was just focused on obama, as oppose to the the last

campaign, where i hopped around a lot. so i don't know. i think that there are -- ways in which narratives take control and sometimes they're not fair. i mean, i think, just to give a nonpartisan example, i think the media wasn't fair to hillary clinton in the democratic parties. there was a lot of anti-hillary stories and more scrutiny than on then senator obam a. sometimes that's because one person runs a better campaign, one person is a more inspirational leader, one person is a fresher face. whatever the reason, sometimes the media should be more careful about bending over backwards to be fair? >> the president was able to run out the clock on benghazi. where was he that night? did he know about the requests for security? was there a request for assistance that night? thwith those who were under fire? we know that ty woods and another navy seal, they disobeyed orders because they were hearing the cries for help. i didn't feel we got an answer
6:19 pm
to a lot of questions. >> there is a lot we don't know about that night, still. we do know that president obamma was meeting with secretary panetta and the joint chiefs chairman in a pre-scheduled meeting and they were told that the compound was under attack. according to the white house, the president said, do what you need to do to save the americans. >> sean: that's what he said. but where was he? when did he know? who said to stand down to the cia annex a mile away. these to me, seem basic. we are watching this in real time. doesn't it seem like the president ought to have known that? >> i don't have the answers you are looking for. >> sean: i am want grilling you. >> i think a lot of -- there is a lot we don't know about -- some of the things you asserted, the cia denies to be true. which is not to take away from jennifer griffin's great reporting. but the cia said there was no stand-down order. there is a lot we don't know. there have been more and more

6:21 pm
troops were originally put there to try to prevent the insurgents from coming in from pakistan. but the years went on and it became more and more dangerous, the reason for the outpost to be there seemed to vanish. but the outpost stayed there. one of the reasons it stayed there was because the military has a very can-do spirit. that can-do spirit is one of the greatest things in the world. sometimes it means that mistakes are not admitted. by the summer of 2009, as the pentagon investigation later admitted, there was no strategical or tactical reason t. become its own self-defense. for years, the intelligence reports had been warning that something bad was going to happen to the camp and it finally did. just before dawn, october 3, 200 19, 400 taliban attacked the camp. 53 americans in the worst possible position. the taliban may be evil but they
6:22 pm
are also smart. they pin down the mortars and the observation post. they knew where to go with everything. eventually, they got in the camp. eight americans died that day. but 45 survive. and the testament and one of the reasons i wrote this book, the heroism of those who survived -- and who died -- was remarkable. they ran out into the hailstorm of bullets and rockets and mortars to save their brothers and provide ammunition. it's a sad story, but it's a very inspiring one. this is who we have serving us in the armed services. >> sean: i am glad, in light of everyone's talking about the salacious nature of general petraeus and all of this. these guys put so much on the line for us. they risked their lives and they sacrifice so much. i don't think an accurate picture is being portrayed enough about our military. i love the book. it's really terrific. very well researched. you went to afghanistan and talked to these guys. really well done. jake, appreciate you coming by. >> you have a lot of fans among

listening. the truth is that they have really been able to get their message out a lot more than we ever thought and i think election day showed that. so to ignore these people is a major, major mistake. forget their ratings. pay attention to what they are saying because oftentimes when you hear on the shows ends up on the smear left web site, et cetera. there is no reason to just disregard this and say, they don't have enough people listening. >> sean: let's go back. this was a comment that was made before election day. again, fast eddie here. i will let him speak. shall we? >> now mitt romney has created some problems for himself when it comes to immigration, when it comes to women's issues that have nothing to do with vaginal management, apparently they are going to equal pay for women. i am getting more burned up, the more i think about it. all right. now this is the locker room today. if this is too much for you, don't listen to the radio show.

>> discrimination. [a lot of boos and jeers]. >> get a life! >> next. >> you have always asked that question, except to mitch mcconnell. >> you are going to stay on and prohibit a younger leadership. >> you are suggesting that everybody step aside? >> no, i am simply saying that the younger leadership will be delayed. >> i think what you will see -- and let's for a moment honor that this is a legitimate question, although it's quite offensive, but you don't realize it, i guess. >> sean: la-ha-ha. what's with the giggles and the boos and the hisses. >> i love luke russert.
